The London 2012 Summer Olympic Games came to a close today (Sunday, August 12th) and during the two-hour closing ceremony themed “A Symphony of British Music,” Stratford’s Olympic Stadium was once again home to a slew of British entertainers.
One Direction – Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson – floated onto the stage via a large moving lorry to perform their No.1 smash hit ‘What makes You Beautiful.’ Adding to the two-hour spectacle, The Spice Girls made the most highly anticipated performance of the night as they sang ‘Spice Up Your Life’ and ‘Wannabe’ atop bedazzled black London cabs.
British comedian Russell Brand made his way to the stage riding on a Magic School Bus and after his performance of the Beatles’ ‘I am the Egg Man,’ he introduced Fat Boy Slim who began to spin his biggest hits as a giant octopus was inflated behind him.
Jessie J soon took the stage in a skin coloured catsuit to perform her hit ‘Price Tag’ before covering Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You.’ She then joined Tinie Tempah to perform ‘Written in the Stars’ before Taio Cruz appeared for ‘Dynamite’ and they all gave a rousing rendition of the Bee Gee’s song ‘You Should Be Dancing.’
As if all of these star studded performances weren’t enough, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, David Gandy, Carmen Campuzarno, Lily Cole and Georgia Jagger, also strutted down the catwalk in amazing pieces by Alexander McQueen while the Olympic cauldron was shrouded in smoke.
Towards the end of the closing ceremony, the mayor of London Boris Johnson passed the Olympic flag to IOC president before Jacques Rogge gifted it to Rio de Janeiro (2016 host) mayor Eduardo Paes.
Formally closing the London Olympics, Seb Coe tells the crowd, “We lit the flame and we lit up the world.” “The ‘Spirit of these Olympics will inspire a generation,” … “When our time came (London), we did it right. Thank you.”
