Katy Perry’s ‘Wide Awake’ is nominated for Video of the Year at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards and MTV has released a series of behind-the-scenes clips from the set of the video.

Perry shows off her comedic side in the footage as she plays with swords and makes jokes on set of the documentary like video. We also see French director Tony T. Datis doing what he does best. “He doesn’t speak much English, and I don’t speak much French,” Perry says. “I don’t think he’s ever actually made a video with the artist in the video.”

“It’s very dark,” she explains. “I always like to bring something different for each video and [for] ‘Wide Awake,’ I wanted to do a retrospective of my last year through artistic moments. The tour, finding myself, and coming out OK on the other side.”

In the event that ‘Wide Awake’ emerges on top, Katy Perry will break another record being the first artist ever to win two Video of the Year awards back-to-back. Her hit ‘Firework’ won last year.

The Kevin Hart hosted 2012 MTV Video Music Awards features performances from One Direction, Alicia Keys, Green Day, Taylor Swift and Pink. The show airs live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday, September 6th at 8.P.M. ET/PT.
