Ellie Goulding Talks ‘Halcyon’ & More ‘On-Air With Ryan Seacrest’

Every few minutes on any radio station in the U.S., Ellie Goulding’s hit single ‘Lights’ receives radio play and yesterday (September 11th), she visited the ‘On-Air with Ryan Seacrest’ studio for a chat and quick acoustic performance.

It’s not very often that we hear Goulding’s voice in a manner of speech rather than singing but this was one of those rare moments and we absolutely love her British accent. After a quick introduction, she spoke to Ryan about her upcoming album ‘Halcyon,’ writing ‘Anything Could Happen,’ her hit single ‘Lights,’ performing at the royal wedding, fear of the dark and more.

Read the highlights of their chat below:

On ‘Halcyon’ (out October 9th): “Even in rehearsals I felt myself welling up a little bit, not that my last album didn’t. But these songs in particular are really emotional and they mean a lot to me, they’re about very personal things. It’s a good thing though, I think. If it provokes that kind of emotion in me, then hopefully that will be the same on the people.”

On Writing ‘Anything Could Happen’:
“I was in the middle of nowhere, in Herefordshire, I grew up there actually. I got to write my album back in the place where I grew up. I think it was pouring down in the rain and I recorded it with Jim Elliott, who lives with his wife and 2 kids, So, it was running around…it was actually cool. That was the first track that we wrote together, I think. When we wrote that, it was like, ‘Okay, we’re going to do the album together.’ I just knew it, I had a feeling.”

On ‘Lights’:
“When we released it in the UK, which was a while ago…it was the 6th or 7th single from my album. So, it was kind of at the point where I was ready to write a new album anyway. So, I didn’t put much into it, then all of a sudden it was like ‘Lights’ is on the radio a lot in the US and that was it, it started it rolling.”
On singing ‘Lights’: “It is really tough…I don’t make it easy for myself at all when I write my songs. If I write a song I’m like. ‘Yes, this is it!’ And then I’m like, ‘Oh damn, I have to play this live?’”

On who ‘Lights’ is about: “Lights’ is about me. I’m kind of afraid of the dark. It’s gotten better now, but I used to not be able to sleep with the lights off. I used to share a bedroom when I was younger with my two sisters, when I was like 18. Then when I went to University and I was by myself I couldn’t bear it, because it was weird that I was by myself. I still find it quite weird.”

On performing at the Royal Wedding:
Ellie’s keyboard player, Max recalls playing, “‘Superstition,’ Billie Jean,’ Blame It On The Boogie,’ ‘I Want To Dance With Somebody.’” And who came up with the playlist? Ellie told us, “All of us collectively. Those guys, us guys, but I played my own songs on the album as well. So, it ended up being quite a long set.”
