‘Work Hard Play Hard’ rapper Wiz Khalifa struggles to find his balance on the cover of the October/November 2012 issue of ‘Complex’ magazine.
Wiz is currently preparing his sophomore album ‘O.N.I.F.C.’ and while it was originally due to be released on September 18th, it was postponed because his label has asked him to produce more radio friendly tracks.
The entire Bryce Duffy shot spread has something to do with balancing or barely standing on the edge and the theme of the shoot directly matches back to his current label situation.
Apart from opening up about his album, he also discusses his label, making himself happy and much more.
The October/November 2012 issue of ‘Complex’ magazine hits newsstands on October 2nd.
Here’s what Wiz Khalifa had to say:
On pushing back ‘O.N.I.F.C.’: “Atlantic likes O.N.I.F.C.,” says Wiz. “But they want more obvious singles because that’s what sells it for them. My belief in the record is what sells it to me. It’s not a conflict. You just have to communicate so everybody understands it.”
On staying true to himself while making Atlantic happy: “When you’re working with other people, you figure out how much you do for them and how much you do for yourself. You can’t just be an artist fighting for your opinion and that’s it. The label has to understand artists. I wanted to make Rolling Papers when I made Rolling Papers, now it’s time for O.N.I.F.C. Now we’re going to do it exactly how I want to do it to see how that works. It can’t be one-sided.”
On making music: “When you start forcing things, you lose people. I never want to do that because none of my favorite artists have ever done that to me — i.e., Juicy J (his artist on Taylor Gang Records). You know what’s right and you know what’s wrong. You know when you’re forcing it and when you’re just laying it down. I’m trying to do more laying it down than forcing it. That’s how you become legendary.”
On his father’s advice: “My dad made me write down goals every couple of months. “He’d say, ‘What are your goals for the next couple months?’ I’d tell him, ‘To get this, to do this, and have enough money to buy this.’”
